01626000 SOUTH RIVER NEAR WAYNESBORO, VA
LOCATION - Lat 38°03'27", long 78°54'30" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Waynesboro City, VA, Hydrologic Unit 02070005, on left bank at the bridge on State Highway 664, 1.3 mi southwest of Waynesboro Post Office, and 2.4 mi downstream from Back Creek.
DRAINAGE AREA - 127 mi². of which 41 mi² are above flood-detention structures.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1952 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 1,295.49 (±0.1) ft above NAVD 88.
COOPERATION - Records were provided by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality - Water Division.
REMARKS - At a point 13.8 mi upstream from station, there is a diversion from Coles Run Reservoir, capacity 80,000,000 gal., by Augusta County Service Authority. There is discharge from a wastewater treatment plant upstream from station, originating from well fields. Flow from 41 mi², upstream from station, slightly regulated by flood-detention reservoirs (sixteen of which were built by Soil Conservation Service between 1954 and 1961). National Weather Service gage-height telemeter and Virginia Department of Emergency Services gage-height radio transmitter at station. Maximum discharge, 17,500 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 4,200 ft³/s on basis of contracted-opening measurement at gage height 13.95 ft.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood in October 1942 reached a stage of 14.3 ft, from floodmarks, discharge, 14,500 ft³/s.
