09363500 ANIMAS RIVER NEAR CEDAR HILL, NM

LOCATION - Lat 37°02'11.65", long 107°52'31.2" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, La Plata County, CO, Hydrologic Unit 14080104, on right bank 0.8 mi downstream from Florida River, 2.5 mi upstream from Colorado-New Mexico State line, 8.5 mi north of Cedar Hill, and at mile 32.9.

DRAINAGE AREA - 1,090 mi². (approximately)

REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1563: 1940 and 1946 (monthly figures only).

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1933 to current year. Monthly discharge only for October and November 1933, published in WSP 1313.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 5,960 ft above NGVD of 1929, from topographic map. Prior to Sept. 14, 1937, at datum between 1.52 ft and 1.36 ft higher. Sept. 15, 1937, to Sept. 30, 1946, at datum 1.36 ft higher.

REMARKS - Water years 2014-2019; records fair except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Diversions for irrigation of about 20,000 acres upstream from station. During water years 1944 to 1949, Twin Rocks canal diverted upstream from station for irrigation, now diverted downstream. Slight regulation by Lemon Dam about 30 mi upstream on Florida River since Nov. 1963 (capacity, 40,100 acre-ft). Streamwater may be pumped from the river in Durango, CO for storage in Nighthorse Reservoir (capacity, 120,000 acre-ft), as part of the Animas-La Plata Project.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - A major flood occurred in October 1911 at this location.
