LOCATION - Lat 42°32'09", long 72°39'14" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Franklin County, MA, Hydrologic Unit 01080203, on right bank 0.4 mi downstream from South River, 1.2 mi west of West Deerfield, 2.5 mi west of Deerfield, and 9.2 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 557 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR MA-RI-84-1: Drainage area. WDR MA-RI-92-1: 1991. WDR MA-RI-14-1: 2011 (M).
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Discharge: March to November 1904, January 1905, March to December 1905, October 1940 to current year, published as "at Deerfield" 1904-05. Water-quality records: June 1994.
GAGE - Data Collection Platform with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 154.46 ft above NAVD 1988, estimated from topographic map. Datum previously reported as 155 ft above NGVD 1929, estimated from topographic map. Prior to Dec. 16, 1905, non-recording gage at site 1.5 mi downstream at different datum.
COOPERATION - Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, Office of Water Resources.
REMARKS - Flow regulated since 1913 by Somerset Reservoir, since 1924 by Harriman Reservoir, and by several power plants upstream.
  • WY2016: No estimated daily discharge. Records good.
  • WY2015: Records good, except for period of doubtful gage-height record, July 2 to Aug. 18, which is poor.
  • WY2014: Records fair, except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor.

  • Maximum peak flow, 89,800 ft³/s, Aug. 28, 2011, from rating curve extended above 40,000 ft³/s on basis of slope-area indirect measurement on Aug. 28, 2011, gage height, 23.77 ft.
