  • Water-Year Summary reports summarize a year of hydrologic data in a printer-friendly format.
  • For water years 2014 onward, choose a water year and parameter and an on-demand Water-Year Summary report will be generated.
  • For water years 2006 through 2013, choose a water year and an Annual Water Data Report will be provided.
  • For water years 2005 and earlier, Annual Water Data Reports may be available in digital format.
  • Not all sites have reports available for every water year.

USGS Water-Year Summary 2024
01472157 FRENCH CREEK NEAR PHOENIXVILLE, PA
LOCATION - Lat 40°09'05", long 75°36'06" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Chester County, PA, Hydrologic Unit 02040203, on right bank 70 ft downstream from two-span county bridge on French Creek Road, 4.5 mi northwest of Phoenixville, and 7.3 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 59.1 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1968 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 160 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, from topographic map. Prior to Nov. 7, 1968, non-recording gage at site 70 ft upstream at same datum. Satellite telemetry at station.
COOPERATION - Station established and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey. Funding for this station is provided by the Chester County Water Resources Authority and the U.S. Geological Survey.
REMARKS - Records for water years 2014-2016 are good except those for estimated daily discharges, which are poor. Records for water years 2017-2020 are rated good except estimated discharge, which is poor. Records for water year 2021 are rated good except flows greater than 5,000 ft³/s, which are fair and estimated discharge, which is poor. Records for water year 2022 are fair except for estimated discharge, which is poor.
ECOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1970 to current year.
REMARKS - Results of benthic surveys can be obtained by contacting the U.S. Geological Survey Pennsylvania Water Science Center, Exton Field Office.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Water year 1950 to current year.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: November 1998 to April 1999, June 1999 to August 1999, June 2000 to September 2001, October 2016 to current year. SUSPENDED- SEDIMENT DISCHARGE: October 2008 to current year. TURBIDITY: November 2006 to current year.
COOPERATION - Samples collected in cooperation from the Chester County Water Resources Authority.
REMARKS -

The reporting precision of the turbidity probe in low turbidity water is +/-0.3 FNU. The lowest reportable value, 0 FNU, does not necessarily indicate a condition of zero turbidity. Values less than 0.3 FNU are considered suspect.

Some samples were collected as part of the Delaware River National Water-Quality Assessment program (DELR NAWQA). Suspended- Sediment Discharge was computed using methods described in Sloto, R.A., and Olson, L.E., "Estimated suspended-sediment loads and yields in the French and Brandywine Creek Basins, Chester County, Pennsylvania, water years 2008-09: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2011-5109. The equation for computing suspended-sediment concentration was "(SSC)=1.689(Turbidity)-3.954" Suspended Sediment Discharge mistakenly published with wording "Mean" rather than "Total" tons/day for water years 2008 to 2013. The numbers represented in the tables are correct. Beginning October 1, 2020 an updated model predicting suspended-sediment is used.  The updated model is "(SSC)=2.212(Turbidity)^.949, as published (Gyves, M.C., 2021, Surrogate regression models for computation of time series suspended-sediment concentrations, Chester County, Pennsylvania (2020): U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9NAN23M).

As of October 2013, results from discrete water quality samples collected at this site are available through the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System web interface on the "Water Quality for the Nation" webpage.

Turbidity records for WY 2014 are rated fair. Turbidity records for WY 2015 are rated fair. Turbidity records for WY 2016 are rated fair with the exception of the period July 26 to Sept. 23 which are rated poor. Water Temperature records for WY 2017 are rated good. Turbidity records for WY 2017 are rated fair. Water Temperature records for WY 2018 are rated good. Turbidity records for WY 2018 are rated poor. Water Temperature records for WY 2018 are rated good. Beginning in water year 2019, water quality records are not rated as "excellent", "good", "fair", or "poor".
