01542500 WEST BRANCH SUSQUEHANNA RIVER AT KARTHAUS, PA

LOCATION - Lat 41°07'03", long 78°06'33" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Clearfield County, PA, Hydrologic Unit 02050201, on left bank 900 ft upstream from bridge on State Highway 879 at Karthaus, 1,000 ft upstream from Mosquito Creek, and 3.3 mi upstream from Moshannon Creek. Records include flow of Mosquito Creek.

DRAINAGE AREA - 1,462 mi².

REVISIONS HISTORY - Revisions: Gage height and discharge for the period Jun 2, 2023, to Nov 1, 2023, were revised on Jan 4, 2024, based on changes to the gage datum of MP2 (reference gage).

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1918 to September 1920 (gage heights only); February 1940 to September 1995; October 1995 to September 2004 (annual maximum only); October 2004 to current year.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder, crest-stage gage, and water-quality monitor. Datum of gage is 830.06 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Prior to Sep 30, 1920, non-recording gage at site 900 ft downstream at datum 20.88 ft lower. Feb 21 to Sep 30, 1940, non-recording gage at site 900 ft downstream at present datum. Prior to October 3, 2023, the datum of gage was reported as 830.59 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929. Satellite telemetry at station.

COOPERATION - Station established and maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey. Funding for this station is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Geological Survey through the National Streamflow Information Program.

REMARKS - Flow regulated since December 1960 by Glendale Dam (station 01541340) about 70 mi upstream and since November 1965 by Curwensville Dam (01541180) about 50 mi upstream. Records are good except those for estimated discharges, which are poor.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum stage known, about 24.5 ft, Mar 18, 1936, from floodmarks at highway bridge, discharge, about 135,000 ft³/s.

WATER-QUALITY RECORDS

COOPERATION - Station established by the US Geological Survey in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

REMARKS - Water temperature and specific conductance data are collected year round. pH and dissolved oxygen data collection is suspended during the winter months. Cross-sectional water quality data is available upon request. Historically water temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius were not reported. Water temperature sensors now have the ability to accurately read water temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. Subsequent to water year 2015, water temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius are reported.

PH: Maximum, 8.6 standard units, Aug 4,5, 2012; minimum, 5.5 standard units, Sep 30, 2015. WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 33.0°C, Jul 22, 2011; minimum, 0.0°C or below, several days during winter periods. DISSOLVED OXYGEN: Maximum, 13.5 mg/L Nov 26, 2015 and Mar 17, 2018; minimum, 4.9 mg/L Jul 25, 2020.
