02087182 FALLS LAKE ABOVE DAM NEAR FALLS, NC
LOCATION - Lat 35°56'28", long 78°35'00" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Wake County, NC, Hydrologic Unit 03020201, on intake tower 50 ft upstream from Falls Lake dam, and 0.3 mi northwest of Falls and 235 mi upstream from mouth.
DRAINAGE AREA - 771 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - Revisions: Gage Height for the period October 18, 1986 to October 1, 2007 was revised on April 21, 2022, based on the deletion of erroneous data.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - February 1979 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder. The gage height is set to NAVD29 and is 0.9 ft below NAVD88 as determined from US Army Corps of Engineers geodetic markers used as reference marks at the site. Satellite telemetry at streamgage.
COOPERATION - Gage is operated in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
REMARKS -

Falls Lake is used for flood control, water supply, low-flow agumentation, and recreation. Temporary filling began May 1981 as water supply for city of Raleigh during drought conditions. Gates were closed on January 13, 1983 and normal pool elevation of 250.1 ft was recorded December 7, 1983. Total capacity of reservoir is 4,998,074,000 ft³ at elevation of 250.1 ft. Extremes for period of record provided by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum elevation, 264.34 ft, October 1, 2, 1999; minimum elevation, 241.52 ft, December 26, 2007.
CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1998 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - FTS LT1 Data collection platform (DCP) and tipping bucket rain gage collecting data at a 15-minute interval. The DCP is housed in a 2x2 ft Aluminum shelter mounted to a 2" pipe on the grounds of the Falls Lake Visitor center to the north of the bathrooms.
REMARKS - Precipitation data collected during freezing periods may not be accurately reflected in daily record. A heated rain gage was installed on March, 4 2013.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: September 2009 to current year.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: September 2009 to current year.
INSTRUMENTATION - Sutron Satlink 3 data collection platform (DCP) and Hydrolab MS5 temperature sensor. Thermometer probe suspended 1.5 feet below the water surface attached to a float on a pulley system that allows the probe to fluctuate with water levels. The assembly is mounted on the north east side of the water intake towers at the dam. Since 2009.
REMARKS - Temperature profiles not collected at this site.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: For current configuration of temperature probe and location from September 3, 2009 to September 30, 2016 Maximum recorded, 35.1℃, June 15, 2010 and July 24, 2016; minimum recorded, 2.6℃, January 09, 2010.
