02343240 WALTER F. GEORGE RESERVOIR NEAR FORT GAINES, GA
LOCATION - Lat 31°37'31.2", long 85°03'52.0" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Clay County, GA, Hydrologic Unit 03130003, at forebay of dam on Chattahoochee River, 1.8 miles upstream from bridge on GA 37, 1.5 miles northwest of Fort Gaines, and at mile 75.0.
DRAINAGE AREA - 7,460 mi².
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

Elevation records collected at same site since 1963 to May 2007 in files of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
GAGE - Satellite telemetry with a water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD) of 1929 (levels by US Army Corps of Engineers).
COOPERATION - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District.
REMARKS - Gage-height records are generally good. Additional details on the accuracy of the records can be obtained by contacting the USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center at gs-w-ga_nwisweb_data_inquiries@usgs.gov.

Lake is formed by concrete gravity dam. Spillway (crest elevation, 206.6 feet) is equipped with fourteen tainter gates 42 feet wide by 29 feet high and one lock, 90 feet wide, with top of upper sill elevation of 172.0 feet. Total capacity at elevation 190 feet, top of gates, is 934,400 acre-feet. Lake is used for flood control and power.
