03057000 TYGART VALLEY RIVER AT COLFAX, WV
LOCATION - Lat 39°26'06", long 80°07'58" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Marion County, WV, Hydrologic Unit 05020001, downstream side of right abutment of highway bridge at Colfax, 300 ft upstream from Guyses Run and 6 mi upstream from confluence with West Fork River.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,367 mi². including that of Guyses Run.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1083: 1942(M), WSP 1335: 1941, WDR WV-97-1: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - June 1939 to September 1995 (daily discharge and annual maxima), October 1995 to September 2002 (annual maxima), October 2002 to September 2008 (annual maximum gage height), October 2008 to September 2010 (annual maximum and minimum gage height). October 2010 to current year (daily discharge and annual maxima). Prior to October 1960 published as Tygart River at Colfax.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemeter. Datum of gage is 855.68 ft above NAVD 88. Auxiliary water-stage recorder Jan. 19, 1945 to Sept. 30, 1985, at site 5.7 mi downstream at datum 856.43 ft above NAVD 88.
REMARKS - Flow regulated by Tygart Dam. Possible backwater at times from West Fork River. Maximum peak stage of 19.77 ft from backwater from West Fork River.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of 1888 reached a stage of 39.6 ft at site 1,100 ft downstream, present datum, from information by local resident. The stage on that day was probably affected by backwater from West Fork River.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 31,700 ft³/s, Nov. 5, 1985, gage height, 18.89 ft; maximum gage height, 19.77 ft, Mar. 5, 1963 (backwater from West Fork River).
