  • Water-Year Summary reports summarize a year of hydrologic data in a printer-friendly format.
  • For water years 2014 onward, choose a water year and parameter and an on-demand Water-Year Summary report will be generated.
  • For water years 2006 through 2013, choose a water year and an Annual Water Data Report will be provided.
  • For water years 2005 and earlier, Annual Water Data Reports may be available in digital format.
  • Not all sites have reports available for every water year.

DRAINAGE AREA - 21,200 mi². 21,200 square miles
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Apr. 14, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011; gage operated seasonally. Oct. 1, 2011 to Oct. 2018 continuous discharge. (discontinued). Stage only Oct. 2018 to current year.
GAGE - Water stage and velocity recorder. Datum of gage is 1055.19 ft. above sea level (NAVD of 1988).
REMARKS - Stage record is rated good.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 99,100 ft³/s, gage-height, 8.09 ft; June 18, 2014; maximum gage-height 10.50 ft, June 26, 2022 (backwater from Lake of the Woods); maximum daily-mean discharge, 84,500 ft³/s, June 18, 2014; minimum daily-mean discharge, 1,330 ft³/s, Oct. 4, 2012.
WATER-QUALITY RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Water Temperature: October 2014 to October 2018.
PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD - Water Temperature: October 2014 to October 2018.
INSTRUMENTATION - Water temperature sensor from the SonTek Argonaut SL, which provides continuous readings. Sensor located at gage.
REMARKS - The USGS, in cooperation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), collected hydrologic and water-quality data from the primary U.S. inflows, main body, and outflow channels of Lake of the Woods. The data were collected to support the development of a water-quality model being developed by the MPCA. The objectives of this study are to: (1) Collect water-quality samples and gage streamflow near the mouths of the Rainy and Warroad Rivers during the open water season of 2010, as part of the Nutrient-Sediment Loading Study, Phase I. Streamgaging and water-quality sampling continued during the open-water season of 2011 to better develop index-velocity/discharge relations. (2) Collect water-quality samples at 10 sites in Lake of the Woods during the open-water season of 2010, as part of the In-Lake Nutrient Study, Phase I. (3) Measure streamflow velocities and cross-sectional areas of 5 channel constrictions in Lake of the Woods, as part of the Big Traverse Outlet Hydrology Study, Phase I. If velocities are sufficient. Channel locations near the Northwest Angle are Tug Channel, Canadian Channel, Sturgeon Channel, Flag Island Channel, and NW Angle Flowage. Temperature at the sensor was compared independently with a calibrated digital thermometer approximately monthly. Corrections were applied based on USGS standard procedures.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 25.9 C, August 17, 2016; minimum, 0.0 C, many days, most years.
