LOCATION - Lat 45°48'08", long 102°21'43" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SW 1/4 NW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.11, T.21 N., R.14 E., Perkins County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10130301, on left bank on upstream side of highway bridge and 9.8 mi south of White Butte.
DRAINAGE AREA - 1,200 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1279: 1947, 1950. WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1945 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1309.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2,298.97 ft above NAVD of 1988. See WSP 1917 for history of changes prior to Jun. 12, 1951. Jun. 12, 1951, to Aug. 20, 1975, water-stage recorder, and Aug. 21 to Sept. 10, 1975, nonrecording gage at site 100 ft upstream; Sept. 11, 1975, to Mar. 22, 1976, nonrecording gage, and Jul. 29, 1976, to Sept. 30, 1989, water-stage recorder at site 1,400 ft upstream, and Mar. 23 to Jul. 28, 1976, nonrecording gage at present site, all at present datum.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Flow regulated by Bowman-Haley Dam, capacity, 93,000 acre-ft, 71 mi upstream, beginning August 1966. Satellite data-collection platform at station.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 13,000 ft³/s, Apr. 13, 2009, gage height 13.30 ft, from floodmarks; minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Aug. 3, 1967, no flow at times in most years.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Maximum discharge, 30,900 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 19,000 ft³/s, on basis of slope-area measurement of peak flow, Apr. 16, 1950, gage height, 20.0 ft, from floodmarks.
