LOCATION - Lat 43°14'24", long 103°35'16" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SW 1/4 SE 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.25, T.9 S., R.4 E., Fall River County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10120108, on right bank at upstream side of bridge on State Highway 71, 2.4 mi upstream from mouth, 2.0 mi west of Heppner, and 12.5 mi southeast of Edgemont.
DRAINAGE AREA - 959 mi² of which 3 mi² probably is noncontributing.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.
PERIOD OF RECORD - April 1905 to Sept. 1906, Oct. 1950 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1309.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 3,297.31 ft above NAVD of 1988. Nonrecording gage Apr. 8, 1905, to May 2, 1906, at site 0.6 mi downstream and May 3 to Jul. 7, 1906, at site 0.4 mi upstream at different datum. Nov. 6, 1950, to May 1, 1951 and Jul. 18 to Sept. 7, 1975, non-recording gage and May 2, 1951, to Jul. 17, 1975, recording gage, at site 0.4 mi downstream at present datum.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. A few small diversions upstream from station for irrigation. Lander Ditch diverts water from Hat Creek 0.4 mile upstream from gaging station for irrigating hay meadows downstream from station. Satellite data-collection platform at station.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 15,800 ft³/s, Jun. 6, 2015 from rating curve extended above 5,900 ft³/s on basis of contracted opening measurement of peak flow, gage height 21.19 ft. from flood marks. Minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Nov. 1, 1950, no flow for many days in most years.
