LOCATION - Lat 43°25'50", long 103°28'33" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.24, T.7 S., R.5 E., Fall River County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10120109, on left retaining wall, about 175 feet downstream from the intersection of River Street and University Avenue in Hot Springs, and 6.0 mi upstream from mouth.

DRAINAGE AREA - 136 mi².

REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1279: 1938, 1941(M), 1947(M). WSP 1729: 1959(M). WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1937 to current year (monthly discharge only for October 1937, published in WSP 1309). Daily discharge November 1937 to current year.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 3414.92 ft above NAVD88. Prior to June 2, 1939, nonrecording gage at site 300 ft upstream at datum 3.00 ft higher.

REMARKS -

Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for Aug. 28, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2014, and Oct. 1, 2017 to Sept. 30, 2018, which are fair and May 5-18, 2015 and estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Record quality ratings may not be included in the water-year summary for approved records newer than 09/30/2018. Record quality is still being rated internally. Flow regulated by dam forming Coldbrook Reservoir, capacity, 7,200 acre-ft, since September 1952, and dam forming Cottonwood Springs Lake, capacity, 8,385 acre-ft since June 1969. Some diversions above station for municipal supply of Hot Springs.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Minimum daily discharge, 14 ft³/s, May 2, 1982, also on some days in 1982, 1983, and 1985.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Maximum discharge, prior to Oct. 1, 1970, 13,100 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 60 ft³/s, on basis of weir formula and slope-area measurement of peak flow, Sept. 4, 1938, gage height, 18.40 ft, site and datum then in use; minimum daily discharge, 4.0 ft³/s, Sept. 23, 1940.
