06436000 BELLE FOURCHE RIVER NEAR FRUITDALE, SD

LOCATION - Lat 44°41'27", long 103°44'14" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in NW 1/4 NE 1/4 sec.03, T.8 N., R.3 E., Butte County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10120202, on left bank near downstream end of bridge on U.S. Highway 212, 2.5 mi northwest of Fruitdale, and 8.8 mi downstream from point of diversion to Belle Fourche Reservoir.

DRAINAGE AREA - 4,500 mi² of which 6 mi² probably is noncontributing.

Daily discharges for December 19, 20, and 22, 2021 were revised on March 22, 2023.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1945 to current year. Monthly discharge only for October 1945, published in WSP 1309.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2,928.09 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). Prior to Apr. 9, 1947 non-recording gage and Apr. 10, 1947, to Oct. 14, 1948, water-stage recorder, at site 350 ft upstream at same datum. Oct. 15, 1948 to Dec. 30, 1958, water-stage recorder, Dec. 31, 1958 to Sept. 23, 1959, non-recording gage, Sept. 24, 1959 to Dec. 6, 2002, water-stage recorder at site 250 ft upstream at same datum.

REMARKS -

Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for May 11, 2015 to July 1, 2015 and estimated discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Record quality ratings may not be included in the water-year summary for approved records newer than 09/30/2018. Record quality is still being rated internally. Flow regulated by Keyhole Dam since Oct. 25, 1952, usable capacity, 191,600 acre-ft, 180 mi upstream. At a point 8.8 mi above station, water is diverted to Belle Fourche Reservoir (see station 06435000) through Inlet Canal (see station 06434505), with other smaller diversions from the main stem and tributaries for irrigation. Total diversions for irrigation of about 60,000 acres upstream from station. Satellite data-collection platform at station.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Sept. 10, 1959, also at times in 1959-62 and 1977.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD PRIOR TO REGULATION - Maximum discharge prior to Sept. 30, 1953, 7,460 ft³/s, June 23, 1947, gage height, 11.03 ft; no flow at times in 1945 and 1948.
