06479500 BIG SIOUX RIVER AT WATERTOWN, SD
LOCATION - Lat 44°56'33", long 97°08'45" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SW 1/4 NW 1/4 sec.13, T.117 N., R.53 W., Codington County, SD, Hydrologic Unit 10170201, on right bank near downstream end of county highway bridge over 453 Avenue, 1.7 mi downstream from inlet-outlet to Lake Kampeska, 7.1 mi upstream from Willow Creek, and 3.5 mi northwest of Watertown.
DRAINAGE AREA - 806 mi² of which 449 mi² probably is noncontributing. documented runoff occurred during 1994-2002 water years for 213 mi² of the usually noncontributing area.
REVISIONS HISTORY - WDR SD-10-1: Drainage area.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - October 1945 to September 1972 daily streamflow. October 1996 to September 1997 as crest-stage gage. October 1999 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage.  Datum of gage is 1,711.41 ft above North American Vertical Datum (NAVD) of 1988. Prior to conversion to NAVD88, datum of gage was published as 1,710.44 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD) of 1929. Prior to Oct. 15, 1958, non-recording gage at same site at datum of 1,710.44 ft above NGVD29.
REMARKS - Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except those for Apr. 13, 2021 to Oct. 5, 2021, Oct. 12, 2022 to Oct. 17, 2022, Oct. 20, 2022 to Nov. 4, 2022, Apr. 14, 2023 to Apr. 25, 2023, and Aug. 28, 2023 to Oct. 11, 2023 which are fair and those for estimated discharges, which are poor. Satellite data-collection platform at station. Water is stored naturally offstream in Lake Kampeska (capacity, 35,500 acre-ft) during periods when river is rising and then naturally released, in part, when river is falling.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Minimum daily discharge, 0.00 ft³/s, Dec. 9, 1945, no flow at times in most years.
