LOCATION - Lat 32°17'25.55", long 104°20'57" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Eddy County, NM, Hydrologic Unit 13060011, on left bank 0.25 mi upstream from mouth of canyon, and approximately 11.0 mi upstream from Dark Canyon Draw at Carlsbad.
DRAINAGE AREA - 327 mi². (approximately)
REVISIONS HISTORY - Prior to June 21, 2023 the datum of the gage was 3544 ft above NGVD29 (determined via topographic map).
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - February 2002 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry and crest-stage gage. Elevation of gage is 3,544 ft above NGVD of 1929. Datum of gage is 3434.19 ft above NAVD88 as determined by a GNSS Level II rapid-static survey performed by the USGS on June 18, 2020.
REMARKS - Water years 2014-2021; records good except for estimated discharges, which are fair.
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - The flood of Aug. 23, 1966, reached a discharge of 66,000 ft³/s, as determined by slope-area measurement at site 9 mi downstream and 1 mi upstream from Dark Canyon Draw at Carlsbad station. A flood of approximately the same magnitude occurred Sept. 20, 1941. Other major peaks occurred July 17, 1906, July 24, 1908, Apr. 18, 1915, Aug. 8, 1916, Sept. 15, 1919, Aug. 4, 1925, and May 23, 1941.
