08405500 BLACK RIVER ABOVE MALAGA, NM
LOCATION - Lat 32°13'44.72", long 104°09'06.67" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Eddy County, NM, Hydrologic Unit 13060011, on right bank 0.6 mi upstream from Black River diversion dam, 4.8 mi west of Malaga, and 7.1 mi upstream from mouth. Mouth at Pecos River mile 436.3.
DRAINAGE AREA - 371 mi².
REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1632: 1948, 1949-50(P). Drainage area revised to a more accurate value on Aug. 21, 2020.
SURFACE-WATER RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - March to December 1940, December 1946 to current year.
GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry, crest-stage gage and concrete control. Datum of gage is 3071.17 ft above NAVD88 as determined by a GNSS Level II rapid-static survey performed by the USGS on June 17, 2020. March to December 1940, water-stage recorder and Cippoletti weir at site 0.3 mi downstream at different datum.
REMARKS - Water years 2014-2015; records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Water years 2016-2019; records good except for estimated discharges, which are fair. Water year 2020; records fair except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Water year 2021; records good except for estimated discharges and flows above 2200 cfs, which are poor. Water years 2022-2023; records poor. Since August 2020, gage periodically affected by downstream channel changes. Diversions and ground-water withdrawals for irrigation of about 1,000 acres, 1959 determination, upstream from station. 
EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - Flood of Sept. 20 or 21, 1941, reached a stage of 19.0 ft, present site and datum, determined in 1947 from well-defined floodmarks, discharge, 33,000 ft³/s, from rating curve extended above 1,400 ft³/s on basis of slope-area measurements at gage heights 8.41 ft and 12.60 ft.
