08406500 PECOS RIVER NEAR MALAGA, NM

LOCATION - Lat 32°12'27.15", long 104°01'25.95" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, Eddy County, NM, Hydrologic Unit 13060011, on right bank 3.1 mi southeast of Malaga, 4.3 mi downstream from Black River, and at mile 432.2. Water quality monitor is located approximately 2.5 mi upstream at lat 32°13'30.08", long 104°02'3.98" referenced to North American Datum of 1983.

DRAINAGE AREA - 19,190 mi². (approximate contributing area)

REVISIONS HISTORY - WSP 1632: 1925, 1932-37.

SURFACE-WATER RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD - May 1920 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1312.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry and crest-stage gage. Datum of gage is 2895.87 ft above NAVD88 as determined by a GNSS Level II rapid-static survey performed by the USGS on June 21, 2018. May 1, 1920, to Mar. 24, 1949, at datum 3 ft higher.

REMARKS - Water years 2014-2016; records good except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Water years 2017-2022; records good except for estimated discharges, which are fair. Water year 2023; records fair except for estimated discharges, which are poor. Flow regulated by many reservoirs and diversion dams. Diversions and ground-water withdrawals upstream from station for irrigation of about 202,000 acres, 1959 determination. Harroun canal bypasses gage on left bank and irrigates approximately 1,000 acres adjacent to and downstream from gage. This bypass is not gaged.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD - A major flood occurred in 1904, discharge not determined. Flood of Aug. 7, 1916, reached a discharge of 70,000 ft³/s, at Carlsbad, 27 mi upstream. Flood in Sept. 1919 reached a stage of 29.4 ft, present datum, discharge, 40,400 ft³/s.
