09234500 GREEN RIVER NEAR GREENDALE, UT
LOCATION - Lat 40°54'30", long 109°25'20" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, Daggett County, UT, Hydrologic Unit 14040106, Ashley National Forest on right bank 0.5 mi downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam, 2 mi south of Dutch John, 4 mi northeast of Greendale, and 407 mi north of confluence with the Colorado river. The station is located in a deep narrow gorge 0.5 miles downstream of the Flaming Gorge Hydroelectric Dam. Channel gradient is quite steep in the reach up and downstream of the gage. The streambed is composed primarily of boulders and cobbles, with some coarse gravel and sand toward the left bank. Heavy algae is common during summer months, and sometimes survives through the winter. The canyon walls are composed of steep, rocky, sandstone ledges vegetated with ponderosa pine, pinion, juniper, rabbit brush, sage brush, and some willows on both banks.
DRAINAGE AREA - 19,400 mi² of which 4,300 mi² probably is noncontributing. This noncontributing area includes 3,959 mi² in Great Divide Basin in southern Wyoming.

WDR UT-76-1: Drainage area. Prior to September 1, 2021, the datum of the gage was 5,594.48 ft above NGVD of 1929 from a topographic map.

GAGE - Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 5,594.21 ft. above NAVD of 1988 from a Level II GNSS survey conducted on September 1, 2021. Prior to September 2, 1959, water-stage recorder at site 2.2 mi upstream at different datum. September 3, 1959, to September 30, 1986, at datum 5.0 ft higher.
REMARKS - Flow completely regulated by Flaming Gorge Reservoir 0.5 mi upstream, beginning November 1, 1962. Records are considered good.
EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD - Maximum discharge, 19,600 ft³/s, Jun 12, 1957, gage height, 10.60 ft, site and datum then in use; maximum gage height, 16.20 ft, Jun 14, 1999; current datum, Minimum discharge, 2.3 ft³/s, Mar 20, 22, 27, 28, 1963.

REMARKS - Storage in Flaming Gorge Reservoir began on November 1, 1962. Extremes are given for two separate periods (water years 1957-62, 1964 to current year). Extremes for the 1963 water year (October 1962 to September 1963) are not included. Temperature extremes for the 1994 water year are not included. Unpublished daily records of specific conductance obtained before 1965 were included in the determination of extremes for period of daily record and are available in files of district office. Most water temperature and specific conductance records for this site are excellent. Information on periods rated less than excellent can be obtained by contacting the Utah Water Science Center.

WATER TEMPERATURE (water years 1957-59): Maximum, 24.0°C, Jul 24, 25, 1959; minimum, 0.0°C, on many days during winter period each year. SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE (water years 1964-2000, 2002-03, Aug 2012 to current year): Maximum daily, 1,060 microsiemens/cm, Nov 9, 1971; minimum, 488 microsiemens/cm, Jul 9, 10, 2016. WATER TEMPERATURE (water years 1964-2000, 2002-03, Feb 2004 to current year): Maximum, 17.6°C, Jul 31, 2009; minimum, 1.6°C, Mar 1, 2, 1987.
