Pleistocene Series
LOCATION - Lat 47°40'18.88", long 93°01'41.81" referenced to North American Datum of 1983, St. Louis County, MN, Hydrologic Unit 09030005, The well is located near Side Lake, MN. The well is located in the McCarthy Beach State Park 'Side Lake Campground' in between McCarthy Beach Rd. and Side Lake, near the restroom/shower building. The well is located approximately 0.7 miles northwest of the intersection of MN HWY 5 and McCarthy Beach Rd.
GROUNDWATER RECORDS
WELL CHARACTERISTICS - Depth 23 ft. Upper casing diameter undefined; top of first opening undefined, bottom of last opening undefined. Well MCBSP-MW1 is a groundwater observation well that was drilled on 09 May 2018 with an 8-inch diameter, hollow stem auger drill rig to 26 feet. The well is constructed of a 10-feet-long, 2-inch-diameter, schedule-40 PVC, 0.010-inch slotted, schedule-40, well screen, attached with to length/s of 2-inch-diameter, schedule-40 PVC well casing. The well casing measuring point (stickup) was 1.79 feet (1383.79 ft. NAVD88, +/- 1.6 ft.) above land surface when measured on 10 Mar. 2020. The open interval of the well is between 13 and 23 feet below land surface and the total well depth is 23 feet below land surface.
DATUM - Land-surface datum is 1,382 ft above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. Measuring point: Black mark on top of 2-inch diameter PVC well casing, not protection post, 1.79 ft above land-surface datum, Mar. 10, 2020 to present. The measuring point is a black mark on top of the 2-inch diameter PVC well casing, which was 1.79 feet above land surface on 10 Mar. 2020. Elevation of the measuring point is 1383.79 plus-or-minus 1.6 feet above sea level, North American Vertical Datum of 1988, based on Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data.
PERIOD OF RECORD - Water levels were recorded periodically from 10 March 2020 to 20 Aug. 2020. Water levels were recorded hourly from 10 March 2020 at 14:00 CDT to 15 April 2020 at 12:00 CDT. Water levels were recorded quarter-hourly from 15 April 2020 at 13:00 CDT to 20 Aug. 2020 at 08:45 CDT.
GAGE -

Water level and water temperature are measured with a Campbell Scientific, Inc. CS451, 0-16.7 ft. range, submersible pressure transducer nominally accurate to 0.01 feet and 0.1°C, respectively. Water level, water temperature, shelter temperature, and battery voltage are all recorded by a Campbell Scientific, Inc. CR300 data logger, which records all data quarter-hourly. The data logger is housed in a 14-inch X 16-inch grey fiberglass shelter attached to 10 ft. tall, 1.25-inch diameter steel mast. The gage is powered by one 20W solar panel and a 12v, 18amphr battery. Data are telemetered by an Sierra Wireless RV50X cellular modem with a magnetic mounted Laird TRA6927M3NB-001, Low Profile NMO Antenna, Phantom Shot Glass Style Antenna.

An unheated Onset RG3 rain gage (primary) was added to the station on 15 Apr. 2020 at 15:15 CDT. The rain gage is mounted on yellow concrete protection post, approximately 0.2 miles SW of the real-time station, next to a large fuel tank at the MN-DNR maintenance building area. This rain gage records quarter-hourly rainfall data. Rain gage is nominally accurate to 0.01 inches. NOTE: This is the primary precipitation record for the site. These data are worked/approved and publicly available.

An unheated Texas Electronic Inc. TR-525-I-01 rain gage (secondary/real-time) was added to the station on 15 Apr. 2020 at 14:00 CDT. The rain gage is mounted on an arm that is attached to solar panel mast, and wired into the CR300 datalogger inside the shelter. The datalogger records quarter-hourly rainfall data. Rain gage is nominally accurate to 0.01 inches. NOTE: This real-time rain gage is installed along a tree-line and is negatively affected by the tree shadow/cover. These real-time precipitation data will only be used for triggering nearby sampling events. These data will not be worked/approved or publicly available.

All monitoring equipment was removed from the site on 20 Aug. 2020 at 09:15 CDT. This site has been discontinued for the USGS/MDH Pathogens study.

COOPERATION - This site is operated from 10 March 2020 to 20 Aug. 2020 by the U.S. Geological Survey as a monitoring well for the USGS/MDH Automated Virus Sampler Study. The USGS/MDH Automated Virus Sampler study is a collaborative study between the Minnesota Dept. of Health and the U.S. Geological Survey.
CLIMATOLOGICAL RECORDS
PERIOD OF RECORD - Precipitation data were recorded quarter-hourly from 15 April 2020 at 15:15 CDT to 20 Aug. 2020 at 09:15 CDT.
INSTRUMENTATION - Precipitation is measured with an Onset RG3 tipping-bucket rain gage, which is accurate to 0.01 inches. The rain gage is unheated and uncovered during the winter. Thus precipitation data during freezing periods (about December through early April) result from melting of snow during warm periods and do NOT represent actual precipitation.
