Download Discrete Sample Data

Discrete sample data are derived from manual field collection and laboratory analyses and include water quality, sediment, biological, air and soil samples from thousands of monitoring locations across the United States and related territories.
Use the data filters to create a set of discrete sample data and select from the available data profiles to download the results. The options available in each filter reflect the available sample data.

Select data filters

Data filters provide options to focus on areas of interest and reduce data set size.
You must select at least one Location or Result filter and may select more than one filter and more than one option for each filter.
Location filters
A monitoring location identifier has two parts: the agency code and the location number. Location identifiers should be separated with commas, for example: AZ014-320821110580701, CAX01-15304600, USGS-040851385. Location numbers without an agency prefix are assumed to have the prefix USGS.
Bounding box
North and South are latitude values; East and West are longitude values.
Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUCs) identify physical areas within the US that drain to a certain portion of the stream network. Follow the instructions to find the HUC in which you are interested.
Multiple HUCs should be separated by commas and must have 12 numerical characters each. For example: 060102072103,070700060201.
Result filters
Observed Property is the USGS term for the constituent sampled and the property name gives a detailed description of what was sampled. Observed Property replaces the parameter name and pcode USGS previously used to describe discrete sample data. Find more information in the Observed Properties and Parameter Codes section of the Code Dictionary.
In the data, the USGS term Observed Property is synonymous with the Water Quality Exchange (WQX) 3.0 field name Result_CharacteristicUserSupplied.

Select data profiles

Data profiles provide a way to tailor large data sets into more manageable files by returning a subset of related data elements.
You must select one data profile.
